Hockey pool, week 18

(ETA: this week's points

Is that OK, Bob, or do I need a chart too?)

Did anyone else see the Canucks-Leafs game on Saturday?! What a game!* The Canucks were 3-0 down at the end of the first and pulled Luongo, but came back to win 5-3. Burrows' shorthanded breakaway goal that started our comeback was a thing of beauty. The Sedins-Burrows line combined for 9 points (I got 7 'cos I don't have Henrik, but I got one for Ehrhoff too). What a perfect way to start the longest road-trip in NHL history!**

The trade that followed the game is an interesting one. Our first reaction was that getting Phaneuf out of Calgary is a good thing. When we looked at the full details I didn't know anything about some of the players involved, but Mr E Man groaned that "I think Calgary got the better end of this one". Not good for those of us that share their division... although apparently the defensive prospect Keith Aulie who went to Toronto is very highly rated.

*Sorry Chall. But as a Swede, you must be excited about how the Sedin twins are performing going into the Olympics! I know I'll be scared of them if/when Sweden play Canada!

**Week night away games in Eastern time zones suck. They start at 4pm my time, and I don't usually get home until 6.30 or 7. And we've lost the remote for the PVR :(

  1. Could you plot the score as points/week? I think it would be easier to see what happens with the scores.

Oh, and imagine the reaction if a branch appeared in the middle of the graph.

  2. I could definitely add that to the analysis. I'll probably keep the existing format too, as I'm focused on whether I can catch That Damn Alyssa...

As the font of all stats knowledge, how would YOU react if a branch suddenly appeared?!

  3. bob> do you mean as a stacked histogram where the numbers add on top of each other but in different colours? Those are nice too :)

Cath> The game on Saturday killed me, just a bit. Or rather, it made me happy that Sedins were doing good although then I got worried about the travelling before the important games. I guess it is good (?) that we have the scapegoat for playing like shit already stated? (nothing like the Swedes to mess this up.... hockey team hasn' been good for awhile).

The trade to Toronto looks really interesteing though. Then again, being that low on the scale, anyone who can keep the puck out of their own zone will be helpful ;)

and I have to admit, I don't get the branch comment at all. silly thick me :)

  4. Plus they won't have "the third Sedin triplet" (i.e. Burrows) to play with!

The branch thing is a reference to a photo I've been posting at Bob's blog and elsewhere. Sorry, should have explained!

  5. We watched the Canucks/Leafs game - it was awesome!!

I hate the late games on Saturday night, because they start at 10pm our time (and finish between 12:30 and 1am :P - I usually fall asleep before that happens though).

  6. Yes, it can suck either way. It's so much easier to schedule games in a small country like England where all the teams play in the same time zone!

  7. Woo. Your Canucks beat the Leafs. I wouldn't crow too much about that - you, me, and those monkeys I keep seeing in your sidebar could probably beat the Leafs.

Dion Phaneuf, mark my words, will not be The Great Messiah. On the other hand, it is likely that your Canucks will be in trouble, because if there's one Great Truth Of NHL Hockey, it's that when players leave Toronto, they begin to perform. Watch out for Calgary.

  8. Yes, it's a bit scary, especially given our stretch of away games.

The bad thing with coming from 3-0 behind to beat Toronto 5-3 on Saturday is that when we went 3-1 behind to Montreal on Tuesday, our players apparently thought "meh, no need to panic" and forgot that it was the desperation and panic that won the game against the Leafs... having said that, both goalies had good games on Tuesday, especially theirs.

Senators tonight... I came into work early so I can leave early and at least catch the final period.

  9. Ricadipus: I'd watch out one of those nights ... ;) no evil words about my Leafs. THey have a heart! And no, those monkeys in the side lines wouldn't be able to win against _us_ (... hopefully not at least)

  10. Chall, I think the monkeys could force overtime, but would lose in a shoot-out

    (runs away)

  11. Cath> kick on the lying down person. do that. it just shows what kind of people of _really_ are.

Ah, I'll just wait for the olympics and show you people which nation is the bravest and best! :)

  12. What?! I was agreeing with you! I said the Leafs could beat a team of monkeys!
