After the round of 16:
3 points were awarded for each correct pick in this round.
Chall rocked in this round, getting 7 out of 8 picks correct! However, Thomas is still top, after calling 6 games correctly, as did Bob, Ricardipus and I.
MadHatter didn't make any picks. Perhaps despondent at still being behind her after the first four games, Massimo didn't make any picks for the second set of four games.
The quarter finals are up next! 5 points per correct pick in the quarters, but the match-ups are getting so difficult to call. Holland-Brazil, FFS! And Germany-Argentina! We don't seem to be able to make our selections just yet, but I'm sure we'll get an email soon telling us that the next round is open!

Holland! Holland!
ReplyDeleteThe crazy Argentinian from work is making me watch the match at 2am. He wants "to see the sorry faces of the Brazilians when Holland kicks them out of the WC".
:D
ReplyDeletefinally some points.
Although I must say, Japan should've won. (eh... not really, it felt like a close game when I watched the commentators..)
now it's that hard part of getting ONE of the quarters correct.... hummm....
Nina, that's funny! Should be a good laugh!
ReplyDeleteChall, that was a tight one alright! I didn't get to see the whole game, but it could easily have gone either way.
The only one of the quarter final matchups where I have any degree of confidence of correctly picking the winner is Spain-Paraguay. However, the only thing I can be sure of with Spain is that when I bet on them, they lose, and when I don't, they win! Every single game in every single tournament!
Could be an all South American final! Doubtful, but possible.
ReplyDeleteI'd say it's fairly wide open at this point! It's getting harder and harder to make those picks!
ReplyDelete(I've picked Spain, btw, so the rest of you should all pick Paraguay, who are now practically guaranteed to win).
That's a tough round to pick, yes.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow I'm off to a preview of the latest exhibition of the Senckenberg Museum, Argentinian Dinosaurs. The following day we'll see how one Argentinian dinosaur performs against Germany.
Bring it!
ReplyDeleteToyed with the idea of picking the Dutch. Less than 10 minutes into the game, I am relieved (currently) that I did not go with an upset pick here.
ReplyDeleteRub it in, why dontcha?! :)
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what anyone else has picked (shouldn't access the site from work), so any rubbing-it-in is purely unintentional ... for now. ;)
ReplyDelete2-1 to Holland with 20 minutes left...
ReplyDeleteHUP HOLLAND HUP!!!
And now I'm not so relieved. Pah.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I'm annoyed. Gah!
ReplyDeleteI've updated the post to show everyone's picks
ReplyDeleteHOLLAND!!!
OK, now come on GHANA!!!
I toyed with changing my picks last night but decided to stay with it. Read too many papers saying "final between Argentina and Brazil".
ReplyDeleteThe Ghana pick was twith me head, not the heart. I'd pick Ghana in heart since I truly want them in the semis... However, I thought the Uruguay played well (that said, I still don't know toone of football stuff but..)
Now I am not as close to the top anymore :(
Cath ... such Euro-snobbery! ;)
ReplyDeleteChall, it's hard to bet against Brazil (or Argentina). But I had a feeling about the Dutch! I'm just gutted I didn't get to watch the game with my Dutch friend, who takes the sport extreeeeemely seriously. With 15 minutes to go she usually declares that she just can't take it any more, and escapes to the garden to pace around. The rest of us have to shout what's going on through the window!
ReplyDeleteThomas, well, we'll see if I was right!
Europe is interesting. Pretty much every country has been at war with pretty much every other country at one time or another. It's not a single voting/supporting bloc, that's for sure!
Don't know what to say, I completely forgot about this... I would have gotten most of them wrong anyway, except Germany-Argentina, Spain-Paraguay (I would have picked Portugal over Spain though), Holland-Slovakia and Holland-Brazil (I always go against Brazil)... At this point I say Holland wins it all by defeating Germany in the re-match of 1974. Spain ends up third by thrashing Uruguay, which concedes in one game more goals than in the rest of the tournament.
ReplyDeleteOops!
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying what I think will happen next until all our final picks are locked in!
