UPDATED World Cup Pool Update 3!!!

WOO HOO!!!

Yay, Europe!

It's time to make the final three picks! We have to submit our choices for the semi-finals AND the final by the time the first of those games kicks off tomorrow (Tuesday). Semi-final picks are worth 7 points each, and the final is worth 10. I think we'll still see some variety in the final picks... maybe...

------
Tuesday July 6th, 11:32 pm PST: Here are everyone's picks!

HA! To be honest, I expected slightly more variety!

I guess it's going to be either me or Thomas - and we'll know by the end of the day tomorrow! Good luck Thomas, and may the best team win!

(I will actually be supporting Holland in the final, if they make it, but I do think the Germans will win. And deservedly so, based on performance to date).

  1. Germany or Spain, Germany or Spain.

  2. YEY! I ended up with 3/4 :)

Now, off to pick the.... winners?.... ehh... ;)

  3. Despite having absolutely no interest in the World Cup, I'm enjoying these WCP updates immensely ... perhaps because unlike the hockey pool where strange names are thrown around, I at least know these countries!

  4. Thomas, I'm not saying anything until all picks are locked in!

Chall, yeah, if you miss one of the semis, your pick in the final could be a moot point! Makes things more interesting...

Lisbeth, hee hee! I'd imagine that would help!

I'm proud to say that I recognised every team in this world cup! Togo confused me a bit last time, but I did manage to guess the right continent at least before looking it up on a map!

  5. Three outta four in the quarters... at least I'm not bottom-feeding any more.

Much as I would like to pick Uruguay again... I'm going with the most.boring.picks.ever. Which will guarantee I don't win the pool, since they will be the same as everyone else's, probably.

  6. You're abandoning Uruguay now??!! :)

Last time around we used a different pool and could see each other's picks (either that or we just told each other - I can't remember, and most of the action was on MadHatter's blog, which is now locked). Anyway I was just a couple of points behind MadHatter going into the final, and she picked the same team as I did. So I picked the team I didn't think would win, just because there was no point in us both picking the same team. And then I ended up losing by a much bigger margin than I would have otherwise!

I think blinded picks are better, on balance!

  7. CAth: there is that. You lose not only the semi but the final... bah! On that other hand, we could've made it like that from the start (as in the NFL pool on my blog) but then it wold be so very hard for the poor people believing in France, Italy and other kicked out team. THis time, we'll have a sort of 50-50 chance ;) (sort of is the key word)

off to the boring picks. I, as R said, Uruguay seems good but are they _that_ good?!!?

  8. NO! Uruguay is not that good! HOLLAND HOLLAND HOLLAND HOLLAND HOLLAND HOLLAND HOLLAND HOLLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never been this excited about football!
(ehm perhaps because they hardly ever make it this far eh!)

  9. And then I ended up losing by a much bigger margin than I would have otherwise!

Second place is the first loser. I prefer to play by the "win big, or go home" philosophy!

  10. And I see you've put your money/picks where your mouth/keyboard is! Nice work, it'll be an interesting couple of days!

I deleted the other comments, btw. It does that sometimes, on other blogs too!

  11. If I win, it'll be monumental. If I don't ... as an American who doesn't follow football/soccer except for once every four years ... the rest of you should be ashamed that I led for as long as I did. ;)

    Now ... go Spain!

( I almost hedged my bets and picked Spain to win v. Germany, and then pick Germany to win it all ;) ).

  12. ...and the semi has started ... and I am starting to wonder about this Dutch goal keeper... really?

ANyway, I guess if Uruguay wins it all - we all lose LOTS of points ^^

  13. It all comes down to tomorrow. Good thing I didn't pick Holland to win it all. ;)

  14. Based on the half-time score, I'm thinking I should have picked Uruguay... damn brain.

  15. This certainly gives me more hope for the Germany v. Spain match. Holland was on top of the world after beating Brazil, and they're playing sluggish here. If a letdown happens for Germany as well, the pool could be mine!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nah, I think we're all OK today! 3-1 to Holland now!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, and all the comments that went AWOL yesterday are back! Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  18. so let me get this straight, after reading this and ponder, I'm either going to end up 2nd or 3rd? And I will get beaten by 1 or 17 points?

ahh... I knew I shouldn't have done the thinking since now it is all gone... all the excitment is exchanged for "drats, only one lousy point now WHY did I think that France was gonna pull through". blä. ;)

  19. Don't worry chall. After Spain beats Germany today, the whole "I only lost by one point" argument will be moot. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I've come second in every pool I've ever run - on my blog and in real life. I'd really, really like to break that trend!

    COME ON GERMANY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. WOW - less than one minute after the final whistle! I thought you'd be here soon, but not quite this soon!

Congratulations, Thomas - the US winning their group, and then this unexpected result today, were great calls!

    HOLLAND FTW!!!

  22. TJ> I guess that is supposed to make me feel better..... but funny enough, it really doesn't ;) I guess if Holland wins over all I only lose with 6 p... so with that you want me to go with "let Spain win"? ;)

I guess I could go with that I would've never ever rooted for Spain. Holland, Urugay, Germany but not Spain... some old grudge I'm sure ^^

    ReplyDelete
  23. Cath, I listened to the entire game. I was up on things from the get go. :P

chall, at this point if Holland wins, no biggie. My victory is secure. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. ...yeah... third Cath :)

    After you... ;)

And thanks for the bragging rights! Make me a happy scientist. happy Monday!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I guess I should post the final update, eh?

    SIGH.

  26. Cath> I _know_ .... not fun at all... ;)
