Friday Quiz: Scrambled Geometry

My sister-in-law got me a "puzzle of the day" desk calendar for Christmas. She apologised profusely for not getting me anything "better" (by which she meant "more expensive"), but honestly it's one of the best presents I got! Some of the puzzles are dumb, but lots of them are really fun, and just occasionally there's a science or maths themed entry that provides me with excellent blog fodder.

This one's a set of geometry-related anagrams, perfect for a Friday quiz for my readers!
  1. ALARM GALLOPER is PARALLELOGRAM (PIKA)
  2. BARLEY HOP is HYPERBOLA (BOB)
  3. EARTH RODENT is TETRAHEDRON (BOB)
  4. GREY TIN MOTOR is TRIGONOMETRY (ARINK)
  5. HOP DEARLY is POLYHEDRA (SILVER FOX)
  6. NUCLEAR DIPPER is PERPENDICULAR (PIKA)
  7. PRIME TREE is PERIMETER (PIKA)
  8. READ TIME is DIAMETER (ARINK)
  9. RELATE QUAIL is EQUILATERAL (ARINK)
  10. SEES COILS is ISOSCELES (BOB)
  11. TO SCRIBE is BISECTOR (PIKA)
  12. UPSET HONEY is HYPOTENUSE (BOB)
Answer in the comments - but please submit only one answer per person per hour, to give as many people as possible a chance to play before Bob attempts to sweep the board like he did last time. Oh, and there's no need to answer in the right order - choose any anagram you like!

I'll update the post with the answers and bragging rights as and when I get time, and I'll add clues if there are any unanswered questions after a day or two.

Have fun!

  2. Morning Bob!

Tell me, do you have a timer set so you know when to submit your next answer? :)

  3. Yes it is!

Sorry Bob, no sweep this time either

  4. Sorry, that was me in the previous comment (and now you know my real name) - problems with being logged in with one google account and using the other for commenting...

Anyway, just wanted to say that this is a cool game and that I also already have no.3 and hope that Bob won't get there ahead of me. :-)

  5. The name you commented under was still showing, so I deleted it "properly"!

  6. Indeed it is! (And welcome to the blog btw!)

  7. Oh bum - not an hour yet. How time fails to fly when you're not having fun.

    Sorry.

I just got 12 as well.

  8. Um, that was 46 minutes, Bob. No more answers now until 9:02 AM my time, under penalty of having your comments deleted!

  9. Indeed it is!

I have to go to work now; please can everyone else keep an eye on Bob?

  10. It's almost 1 hour now for me. :-)
    So, 6 - perpendicular.

Cath, thx for deleting the comment completely.

  11. Ooh, it looks like I can.

    12 is hypotenuse

  12. I'm off for a pizza soon, so I'll just suggest that "Bier Cost" might be a more appropriate anagram for 11.

    Right, just got 6 too.

  13. OK, now it's 1hr and 2 min since my last comment.

Bob, I already got 6, you are too late, sorry. :-)

And now I also have 7 - perimeter.

  14. Thanks for the welcome...I usually just lurk, but couldn't pass up the game today.

    8 is diameter

  15. Still waiting for Grrl to finish her blogging, so I've got 2, but can't think of any cryptic clue for it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh i suck at these, so i'm not even trying. Do you know how long its been since i've done geometry!!! Don't hurt my brain so early in the morning damn it. Especially on a friday.

  17. drat. Now I need to know math terms in English AND solve puzzles? ;)

I'll get on it at lunch break. Maybe one little word... very little?!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Phew. It's time.

The good thing about Grrl being so slow is that I have time to saw that 2 is hyperbola.

    And now pizza.

    ReplyDelete
  19. GAAH I can hardly keep up!

    Yes Bob, it's time

    ReplyDelete
  20. You guys are good!

Arink, quizzes and competitions are good like that!

ScientistMother, I'm a crossword fiend so I loves me some anagrams! It took me a while but I got 11 of the 12 without looking them up - #11 tripped me up.

Chall, my apologies to you and other ESL readers!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Now Grrl has "one last thing" to do, so I'll probably have 4 worked out and posted by the time we go.

    *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  22. My turn again: 11 is bisector.

    ReplyDelete
  23. drats. I did get the hyperbola...almost, I made it to hyperbol* and then remembered the curve thing ;)

but what does it matter? Bob has already claimed it. *mutters off to eat proper lunch*

Cath> I think it's a fun thing. I'm just complaining since I suck at some things clearly :) No apologies!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oooh and I know 4 too, but now I have to wait (and I bet Bob will be faster anyway :-(.

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK, so the current standings are:

    Bob: 4
    Pika: 4
    Arink: 2
    Silver Fox: 1

Bob has 34 minutes until he can answer again, and Pika has 55. Will one of them prevail? Or will someone else swoop in and force a tie?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Woo hoo! An honourable tie!

Thanks for playing, everyone - this was fun! (and so fast!)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Before you posted the correct answer for number 4, I attempted to answer it. As soon as I posted it, I realized:
    1) I was a minute too late to post it :(
    2) I had posted with my real name....so had to delete those comments :(
I am usually a lurker....but I love word games like these (although I pretty much suck at them), so could not resist attempting to answer....failed at that too!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yay arink! I didn't have a clue.

    The pizza was good, though.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi bugsybug! I wondered what happened there... I've deleted the other comments so that the name doesn't show up any more.

I love seeing the lurkers come out to play!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yay, shared first place!

Here's a high five for you Bob: high five! :-)))

Cath, what a cool game, it was really fun, thanks for this!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Glad you enjoyed it! I've done a couple of other quizzes based on this calendar on my other blog (now ex-blog), but this is the first time over here, and I'm glad everyone got into it. The last two took a few days each to complete, and this one was done in just a few hours!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good lord. I saw this post when there were no comments, and in ten minutes or so of trying couldn't solve even one.

    *hangs head in shame

    ReplyDelete
  33. Never mind Ricardipus, I'm sure you're very good at other things :-p
