Snowed under...

I'm back! Ever so slightly hungover, but the jet lag has gone. Staying out until after 2 am on our first full day back seemed to reset my system.

This is what happens when you leave your car outside for two weeks during record snow falls... this is NOT normal weather for Vancouver! And it's still snowing!

I hope everyone had an excellent Christmas or other festive break. Our first week in the UK was awesome, but unfortunately the second week was spoiled by a 24-hour norovirus that my sister brought with her from London and that swept through the entire family. It hit me next, at about 11.30 pm on Christmas Eve, so I was the only one to miss Christmas dinner. I did get to open my two stockings though - chocolate, fruit, chocolate, whiskey, more chocolate... just what I needed! Mr E Man and my Dad went down next, and my Mum was just getting over it as we left. Lovely.

Still, at least I lost some weight over Christmas, for the first time in my life...

So, back to reality - I worked from home yesterday, and am due back in the office tomorrow. As usual when coming home from a trip, I'm feeling a bit snowed under with laundry, other household chores, work stuff, and an avalanche of blog posts - I'll get to them soon, I promise!

Like Mr E Man, I need to start digging out. If only it would stop fucking snowing...

Happy New Year, everyone!

  1. Welcome back Cath! Vancouver this Christmas has been quite an experience!! Sorry to hear about the norovirus - that was a big problem in the UK last year too - fortunately I escaped.

  2. I hate the effing noro-viruses. One of the few reasons why being away from my kid was a good thing; didn't suffer from the noros for a few years!

  3. Hi both! Dr J, I'm kinda sorry I missed all the snow when it still looked pretty, but I hear it was a bit chaotic so maybe it's just as well.

What is it with noroviruses in Europe? It seems to be much more of a problem there than here. Here it's only ever on the news if it hits a cruise ship or a nursing home or something, you don't tend to hear about it sweeping the general population like you do on the BBC... still, compared to the 10 day bacterial food poisoning I had once, the norovirus was a breeze. Sure it's nasty, but it's over in 24 hours. Just sucky timing. But even then, getting it at Christmas was better than getting it on the plane or something!

  4. Haha - you call that snow? There are cars in our apartment parking lot that aren't visible anymore and we have 10ft high mounds of snow in the gardens. The earthmover has just arrived and is now dumping snow over the fence into the vacant lot next door.

Welcome back, btw and a Happy New Year!

  5. Oh, how I dislike the snow. I'm very afraid of what my car will look like at the Park 'n' Fly..... they do plow, but they don't replow around the cars..... sigh.

  6. Welcome back, Cath! Happy New Year!

And what is it with viruses over winter break?! Yeah, my family got hit with some GI bug, too...

  7. Cath! I'm sorry I missed you, but not sorry I missed the norovirus. I can't believe it took you a couple days to get over your jet lag. I've been in California for two and a half weeks and I think I'm still a little jet-lagged. By the time I get over it, I'll be back in London.

  8. welcome back and happy new year! Quite your complaining, at least half of the snow that fell has melted.

  9. Welcome back! Glad they didn't push your car out of the way. Probably the snow is so rare they don't have no-parking in winter ordinances. And I'm glad the snow I've seen is over - so far. Happy New Year.

  10. Good to hear you got back safely. What do the cats think of the snow?

  11. Welcome back. Sorry you got sick, but glad the trip was otherwise good. EGM and I seem to get seem to get sick more often than we should when we visit my hometown. sucks.

  12. Welcome back! Sorry to hearabout the virus.... (I guess you can think as I did about the "good" about not gaining but it is a fleeting thing and not real..)

I'm envious of the snow and it looks amazing. I'm guessing it will be a few trips to the skking slopes now huh?!?! ;) 40 min and then just GOOOOOO....

anyhow, happy new years again! Hope your first day of the year was lovely!

  13. Welcome back! Glad that your trip went well, for the most part. Did you manage to dig out your car? Mine is buried as well, but will stay that way until the roads are clear. I don't ever remember having such a long stretch of snow on the roads - it is almost like the rest of Canada!

  14. Thanks all for the New Year wishes. I missed answering comments while I was away!

PiT, what can I say, this is Vancouver, laughing stock of Canada...

UR, surely there will at least be someone there to help you dig out?! I hope you manage to extract the car!

Bean-Mom, sorry to hear it took you out too. Viruses are evil. Cool (as per Mad Hatter's posts), but evil.

Ruchi, flying West is always much easier for me - all you have to do is make sure you stay awake for an extra couple of hours after landing, go to bed, and get out in the daylight the next morning. Going the other way is much much harder. Having said that though, I was wide awake at 3am this morning, so maybe I'm not quite there yet. Tea is my friend.

SM, yeah, our friends kept sending us photos while we were away of how much snow there was! I'm really only moaning about the metaphorical snow right now though, the real stuff is actually very pretty. And don't the mountains look awesome?!

SF, yeah I don't even know what a winter ordinance is. Did I mention laughing stock of Canada?

Bob, they are confused. I let them out yesterday, but they were reluctant to go anywhere near the nasty paw-freezing white stuff. Based on previous experiences with other cats, it's probably best not to pick them up and put them down in a 2 foot drift, as amusing as that would be.

EGF, I think the very act of travelling throws your immune system off or something. We both feel like we're coming down with colds now, probably from the plane!

Chall, yes it's the kind of weight loss that reverses as soon as you start eating normally again - booooooo!

No ski trips planned as yet, but Mr E Man isn't working today and is taking my skis and his board for waxing and sharpening. Can't wait to start planning!

Mermaid, he successfully dug out on the 31st, although getting in and out of the parking space is still quite a palaver. When we first got back and saw how everyone is reserving their spaces with buckets and chairs, we laughed, but after 2 hours of digging, Mr E Man now understands the motivation behind it. We haven't been reserving ours though, it's probably too tight a space for most people to get into!

  15. Happy New Year! Sorry to hear about you getting sick. It always seems that something is going around my family at the holidays. My theory is that you have a bunch of child-less adults exposed to young, germ-factory-like, children. :-)

  16. Happy New Year! Glad you had a good trip (minus the virus - that sucks!), and that you get to have a little fun with the snow :)

  17. Happy New Year ! Please don't talk to me about returning home to harsh climates. Yesterday I experienced a 60 C temperature drop from 7 am to 10 pm... :-(

  18. ....hockey :) Final this Tuesday- Can vs Swe :)

At least for the junior side the swedish team do not suck. The big team.... ehh... lets leave that one for now.

And I am ambivalent about Sundin joining Canucks. Have to agree that I am experiencing "I have no team left since he was such a kill joy this summer". Guess I need to work on the hard attitude and lost love I am dealing?!?

I thought about updating my tshirt collection with a new canucks tshrit (a girly one this time) since my old one is..... old.... ;)

  19. Amanda, there were no young children present, my sister thinks she picked it up at work. Work should be banned.

SG, thanks! There is the possibility of a Whistler trip this weekend.

Massimo, I shouldn't laugh. But I will. Mwa ha ha ha...

Chall, the game is actually today! 4pm PST, we have set the video... let's hope for a good game and may the best team win!

  20. No need to set the video as I believe TSN is streaming it live! I have yet to be at a canadian uni that did not have an unofficial "everyone go to the pub during an important hockey game" policy. The SFU AV department used to TVs out in the hallways with the games on.

  21. My department is weird though. I suspect that I will be working until the usual time and then trying to rush home on the bus.
