Cath's shoe of the week

You can keep your Randy Macaques or whatever they're called, this was the only shoe (or shoe combo, really) for me today:

My trusty 11 year-old leather hiking boots, and rented snow shoes. Stylin'.

In addition, you can keep your sodding Superbowl, this is the best way to spend a snowy afternoon in Vancouver:

My two lovely friends enjoying similarly awesome footwear at Cypress Mountain while our husbands watched the game, the poor sad fools.

  1. Finally, someone who shares my taste in footwear!

Alas, there was no snowshoeing for me this weekend as my knees are playing up :(

  2. Oh, sorry to hear that.

I want my own snow shoes now. I tried to get some used ones last week, but the used sports gear place said that they sell within a day or two of arrival at this time of year. I'll keep trying, and buy some new ones at the beginning of next season if nothing comes up before then.

  3. Mmm, snow. I am afraid I already saw all the snow I get to see this winter - glad you are still enjoying it!

Now, I trust you would feel different about watching the game if it were real football? (I know I would ;)

  4. It's very addictive fun. This is only my first winter in the frozen tundra but I already have two pairs of snowshoes ... massive gear junkie!

Not sure what the outdoor store situation is like in Vancouver, but I can highly recommend REI and Backcountry.com as both often have great deals on snowshoes. Haven't been to Seattle yet, but I hear they have a big-arse REI store there.

  5. Alright! Nice shoes. I did manage to go hiking through mud and snow today - without snowshoes. :(
And then still had time to watch the S-Bowl, first time in many years.

[REI originated in Seattle, I think.]

  6. Never done done snowshoeing. But seeing all that snow makes me desperate for a week of cross country skiing

  7. I Agree! Only I spent my day on skis. What superbowl?

  8. Spending our first winter in Switzerland we're exploring the winter sports. We went sledding(?) last weekend and 2 km of twisting and turning downhill is certainly also fun for adults.
    Snowshoeing will be next :)

  9. Nice!
Snowshoeing was on my to-do list too this weekend, but unfortunately better half forgot to bring his hiking boots ...
But I am sure the coldest/longest/snowiest winter in decades will give me another chance to go

  10. Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy at the end of the season?

  11. 'You can keep your Randy Macaques or whatever they're called'

    That's priceless.

  12. SG, given the state of affairs in Newcastle right now, I am mostly spending this season pretending that real football does not exist.

PiT, wanna sell me one pair? ;) Up here it's all about Mountain Equipment Co-op (www.mec.ca).

SF, muddy snow - sounds like fun...

HGG, I've only gone cross-country skiing once, but I'd love to go again. My bro-in-law's girlfriend is into it so I'm going to ask her if she'll take me out. Do you do classic or skate skiing?

Wayfarer, with or without dog-assisted propulsion? (That sounds like so much fun).

Lisbeth, I've been sledding a total of one time - that's what you get for living in a flat bit in England. And now that I have snows and hills available, I'd rather go skiing!

Nina, yes, plenty of snow left!

Bob, it's possible, but I'd really rather buy used, and the guy at the second hand sports gear place said that the late spring/early summer would be the most likely time. If nothing comes up used in that time, then my only option is to buy new ones at the beginning of the next season...

  13. DrDrA, I've seen far too many wildlife documentaries - that's the image that "naughty monkeys" conjures up in my warped little brain.

  14. What fun! If you want to go in the near future, let me know as I will lend you mine (save you the cost of renting). They won't do me much good when I am in South East Asia!

  15. Ooh, I might take you up on that - thanks! Unless you want to join us of course!

  16. oh... I miss MEC. I especially miss my lovely duffel bag. My friend back in Sweden reminded me today that she is enjoying it alot.... :) I would really like the smaller one today since that would be great for overnight going away, and/or gym...

hmmm, maybe I should try and see if I find my meccard when I get home. Stranger things have happened.

The snow shoe thingy seems awesome!! I would love to try. So, since I've never done it - do you walk or glide?

  17. Snow shoes! I'm so jealous!

Thanks for the interview - post is up at mine. :)

  18. Chall, I love love love MEC. Except for their sizing - I'll be the first to admit that I'm a little bit overweight, but I barely fit into their large and extra large sizes, which is ridiculous (I'm about a size 12). It's only about 4 blocks from my work, which is... dangerous.

With snow shoes, you basically just walk. The shoes spread your weight over a wider area so you don't sink into the snow, and they also have teeth that grip the snow/ice so you don't slide. Well, not much - I did slip around a bit on some of the steepest downhills.

AA, thanks for doing the interview!

  19. Cath: my first pair of snowshoes looked similar to the rentals you were wearing and I was slipping on even the tiniest slopes so I bought a pair of these and never looked back! It's like wearing mountaineering crampons to walk on grass - AWESOME!!
