Meet MacTavish

New morning ritual chez moi:

It's very meta to post a photo of the draft version of this post

Yep, turns out the iPhone is a pretty powerful gateway drug. I'd already pretty much decided to get a Mac "at some point" (thanks all for your input!), but I was waiting for a freelancing/overtime (it's complicated) cheque to come in first. Mr E Man knew all this... so when he came back from a shopping trip on Sunday and shouted "babe, do you mind if I give you your present early, and not wrapped?", I didn't expect him to thrust a MacBook into my hands! But he did... and I promptly announced that he could go and watch the hockey by himself, I was staying in to play with my new toy.

I've already had all sorts of fun with the trackpad and familiar programmes (internet, iTunes etc). I've got my free 30 day trial version of iWork to play with, plus iPhoto and all that good stuff, so I'll watch all the tutorial videos over the weekend. Apparently the store where Mr E Man bought the Mac has a seminar for new Mac users on Saturday, which I should probably go to!

Expect lots of confused and/or excited posts/Facebook updates as I explore the new system...

Oh, and the name? When my younger sister was little, my Dad called her Tadger - Geordie dialect for young child / toddler. When we went on holiday to Scotland, he renamed her Tadger MacTavish. In France she was La Tadge, in Ireland she was Molly O'Tadge... that's my Dad for you. But one name just stuck, and even though she's now 30, my parents still ask me if I've talked to Tadger MacTavish recently. My sister has always been much cooler than me, so MacTavish seemed like a very apt name for my new toy.

  1. Wahoo! New toy! Mr E Man is pretty good with the spiffy pressies, isn't he?

  2. Oh ? MacTavish ? As in Craig MacTavish, the coach of the Edmonton Oilers ? HAHAHAHA, this is too funny....

  3. Wow, powerful gateway drug.

Welcome home, MacTavish. Yes, very meta photo!

  4. Woo! Nice gift - kudos to Mr E Man! Welcome to the MacWorld...it's so much nicer here :)

  5. Thanks, HG! I was pretty happy with my gift!

Mermaid, yes, I have trained him well ;)

Massimo, la la la, I'm not listening to you (sticks fingers in ears). The name stays 'cos my sister is way more awesome than any hockey coach. I'm just going to forget that you told me about this upstart Craig dude.

Bean-Mom, the phone definitely helped to push me over the edge. It's just so slick and awesome (hear that, Massimo, with your hockey trash talk? ;)) MacTavish is living up to expectations so far.

Mrs CH, thank you! There's no-one more evangelical than a new convert... but I need to learn what I'm talking about first.

  6. Oh! Pretty and new! I'd better stop now before my macbook gets jealous. :-)

  7. Massimo, la la la, I'm not listening to you

Hey, hey, it's all right... it's all right... I know how difficult it must be for you to come out of the closet... don't worry, those who love you will support you, you are still the same Cath@vwxynot that you were yesterday, you simpley have told them where your true hockey passion lies.
It had to happen, sooner or later.... Boy, how hard all of these years must have been for you... pretending to be a Canuck fan, while you heart was secretly bleeding for those magnificent Oilers... but it's all over now, friend, your seat in the nose-bleed section at Rexhall place is there for you... LOL

  8. sorry but when I saw the title of your post, I immediately thought of craig mactavish as well...

  9. "don't worry, those who love you will support you, you are still the same Cath@vwxynot that you were yesterday, you simpley have told them where your true hockey passion lies."

Dude, you've obviously not met my husband and friends...

Although, actually, Edmonton is Mr E Man's "second least-hated other Canadian team", after Ottawa. He'll support any Canadian team over any US team though, even the Habs.

Not that it matters 'cos I aint no Oiler!

Anyway... to both you and SM, I say: coaches come and go, but my sister will always be Tadger MacTavish. I'm keeping the name and I don't care what you think! ;) (Also, I am trying very hard to still think of Newcastle United's goalkeeper when I hear the name Stephen Harper, rather than that smug piggy-eyed git who is polluting the goalie's good name).

BTW, my bro-in-law starts his new job in Edmonton today. Over IM yesterday, I asked "how's Edmonton?" He replied "colder than a well digger's ass!"

  10. Yes coaches come and go, but MacTavish was also part of the oiler dynasty, he will forever be associated with them...

  11. I just spilled hot mint tea all over my desk (at work), causing a temporary interruption in the function of my PC. Apparently I'm not just evangelical, but militant too.

    Also, Oilers Schmoilers.

  12. Dude, your husband totally upped the ante. How will you ever get him a present better than MacTavish?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Love, love, love the mac! Enjoy!!

  14. Also, Oilers Schmoilers.

Sure, friend, of course... totally... (wink).
Just think of how much easier your life is now.... each time someone calls you on that shiny iPhone of yours, and the ringtone goes "LETS-GO-OILERS-LETS-GO !", you can just relax and answer, instead of screaming or making some funny noise to cover the sound, or hiding away...

  15. Ah :) Welcome to the dark side - I am pretty sure we don't have to ever worry about you leaving :P (And I am a little jealous over here as my own laptop is about to start kindergarten. Me thinks I need a job to feed my fancy addiction ;)

  17. GarageBand is for podcasting. Just sayin'

  18. Um. Your blog ate my comment. Again.

  19. Ruchi, I have no idea! I usually get him an "experience" as a present - concert tickets, and for Christmas, golf lessons. I think I'm going to have to somehow find some Olympic gold medal hockey tickets, or a lesson with Tiger Woods, after this!

DrDrA, thanks! I am having fun...

    Massimo, talk to the hand

SG, the dark side is fun! Although I'm actually on the PC right now as I'm copying some files off it and onto an external hard drive, for transfer.

    Albatross, will do!

DrugMonkey, I'm sure you're right, and as soon as I figure out what you just said, I will no doubt agree with you.

Thanks, PiT! Hope you're feeling better

RPG, another WebKit problem? Or is it the new embedded comments? I prefer this format, but I guess I can switch it off if lots of people are having problems...

  20. What seems to happen Cath is the the first time I hit post (or preview) it comes back with an error—and if I've gone to another page already that's it, it's gone.

Waiting, and hitting the button again, seems to work.

  21. Except that time.

*sheesh*. Get MT4. It'll make everything better.

  22. Actually, that sometimes happens to me on other blogs that use the same comment format. But only the first time I comment in each internet session - after that, it works first time from that window on every Blogger page that uses embedded comments.

  23. Congratulations and welcome to Mac world. Although I do know some people who are equally happy with their pc's as their macs, most can never go back after the sleekness, stability, and seemless performance of the mac. I do run parallels on my mac, which allowed me to also install and run windows (necessary for the microsatellite software I currently use), but even windows software runs better on the mac. The integration is absolutely perfect and I can open files from either environment. Macs are addictive. Happy computing!

  24. It's early days yet, but I think you might be right!
