2012 LOLympics

I have had an incredibly hard time not laughing out loud at my desk today.

If you thought the London 2010 Olympic logo was bad (and it really, really is),

you should see the mascots!

ROFLMFAO!!!!!!! What the fuck were they smoking thinking??!! As if the actual design isn't bad enough, the execution is awful too - the one on the left is all lumpy, FFS!

More hilarious photos here

I know a lot of people didn't like the Vancouver 2010 mascots, especially when they first saw them, but I thought they were pretty good. Except for Quatchi, of course - Quatchi is AWESOME. I bet he could kickWenlock or Mandeville's ass any day of the week.

Although Quatchi loves all winter sports, he’s especially fond of hockey. He dreams of becoming a world-famous goalie. Because of his large size, he can be a little clumsy. But no one can question his passion. He knows that if he works hard and always does his best, he might one day achieve his dream. Quatchi is always encouraging his friends to join him on journeys across Canada. He is also often recruiting others to play hockey – or at least to take shots at him!

The sasquatch is a popular figure in local native legends of the Pacific West Coast. The sasquatch reminds us of the mystery and wonder that exist in the natural world, igniting our imagination about the possibility of undiscovered creatures in the great Canadian wilderness.

A hockey-playing sasquatch? Now THAT is a mascot.

Suck it, London!

(But thanks for the giggles)

  1. I just can't stop staring at the crotch of the one on the left. Why the $%^ did they highlight its crotch in blue?? Maybe it was to distract us from the cellulite of the one on the left.

  2. LOL!! I was thinking the exact same thing as Beth - WTH is up with the blue crotch?

  3. Ack! The logo comes straight from those spatial intelligence questions on IQ tests! If I can make a complete shape out of them, am I smart enough for MENSA? Or maybe it is a Make-Your-Own Logo game?

I don't even know what to say about the mascots. They look a bit like really poorly designed hand-held showers. Or something :).

  4. Beth: I know! It looks like something from a diaper or sanitary pad commercial! It just draws the eye in a very disturbing way.

Mermaid, I've just read that the right half of the logo looks like Lisa Simpson kneeling down. What exactly she's doing to the left half of the logo is best left to the imagination.

And they totally do look like shower heads! Amongst other things!

  5. OMG I was totally fixated on the damn crotch and the one eye! Is it supposed to represent the one -eyed monster, hehe. All I kept thinking is that my kid would keep asking what happened to its other eye!

  6. The names are worse: Wenlock and Mandeville! I love Quatchi too!

  7. It's damn humiliating. I hate that stupid logo, and it's bloomin' everywhere for the next two and half years!

  8. They are joking right?? right????

    Seriously look like alien criminals.

    Ewwww

  9. The photos with the kids hugging those things is bullshit. If I saw one of those coming at me as a grade schooler I would have either run or thrown rocks at it, or both. Who thought the giant one-eye-head thing was a good idea? I think it's time to scrap the whole committee and start over.

  10. Alyssa, ooh, your comment reappeared! I saw it pop up yesterday, but it was gone by the time I left my last comment. Weird. Almost as weird as the blue crotch...

ScientistMother, one-eyed monster was definitely one of my first thoughts! I bet there are lots of parents trying to think of explanations this morning!

K, I actually don't mind the names too much. Or maybe they just don't seem quite so bad in comparison to everything else about the mascots!

    Quatchi rules!

Jane, my sympathies. But once the torch relay starts, all this crap just fades into the background and all the positive, fun stuff takes precedence.

Viv, I did wonder! But I'm afraid they do seem to be the actual mascots rather than an elaborate joke.

Prof-like, no kidding! I think I'd have been cowering in the corner of the playground myself. I might even as an adult, if I saw those... those... things coming at me.

  11. My reaction can be summed up in a simple phrase -

"What the hell am I looking at?"

Even more disturbing is that someone got paid to think of that - and probably got paid a lot more than I do.

  12. wow, I'm amazed.

First thought looking at the logo "huh, that can't be 2012 because surely the 2's would look alike then?" (I know, the might have tilted the second 2 but what's with the ' then?) Is that colour magenta or simple hot pink btw?

Second thought "oh, the made look-a-like teletubbies as mascots. But what's with the diapers?" ;)

I didn't really notice the one eyedness.... duh. I wonder why they would move towards "no nose, eyesa nd liops" since that is a common knowledge for people's recognition and good selling point for stuffed toys for children.

  13. WTF is that logo?

It's, um... er... well it's got legs. I think. And a square bit. And sort of an "L" - I guess that's for "London".

And... a CROTCH! It's got a crotch too. That little square-ish dingus in the middle.

As for Weirdblock and Mental - forget it, everybody else said it already.

I am thinking this: there is a marketing firm, likely in the UK, that needs to be fired. Immediately.

  14. My first reaction: Cath MUST be joking!

Second: the London mascots look like characters from this kids' show "Yo Gabba Gabba." Actually, I hate that kid show. But it mesmerizes Toddler Legume.

    Third: Qatchi really is cute.

  15. OMG, at least it wasn't the Teletubbies.

  16. Wow, I am speechless.

And I really don't get what that logo is supposed to be? Stylised form of the largest of the British isles, twice, except once tilted at a weird angle, but why? Or am I totally off the mark?

  17. Cath - I'll never be able to look at that logo the same way again. Lisa Simpson, indeed.

  18. RPS, yeah, that's the depressing part. Someone somewhere is laughing all the way to the bank! (Or rather some people, somewhere. This has "design by committee" written all over it).

Chall, I think the logo is supposed to say 2012. I have no idea what the ' is doing in there though. And you're right, these don't seem like great ideas for "cute and cuddly stuffed toys that every kid will want to have". Whereas I'm still seeing tons of Quatchi and Muk Muk toys around Vancouver...

Ricardipus, I love the new names Weirdblock and Mental. I'll be using those from now on! And "legs and crotch" is yet another great way to look at that logo...

    Bean-Mom, nope, sadly not joking!

I guess if toddlers love a show that has characters that look like this, maybe kids WILL like the logos. It still seems like a bit of a stretch though!

Bob, so you think that mutant alien phallus teletubbies are better than the originals?!

Pika, I think it's supposed to just be the numbers 2012. But it's very, very hard to tell.

Beth, sorry! Once it was pointed out to me, I couldn't un-see it either!

  19. cath> I just wonder why the first 2 in 2012 and the second one are not the same. I mean, wouldn't that be something to strive for?!?! (clearly not a PR major here, just a regular person ;) )

  20. Wow, apparently I don't know my left from my right. Or, in my case, my left from my left. Thanks for fixing that in BRC!

Also, I had no idea that was supposed to be a 2012 in the logo!!!

  21. Bob, so you think that mutant alien phallus teletubbies are better than the originals?!

It's close. But I was mainly worried about the Teletubbies selling out and compromising their artistic integrity.

  22. Chall, I think the mis-matched 2s are the least of that logo's problems!

    Beth, no problem!

Bob, I wonder if you might be over-thinking this...
